Five Smartphone Settings That Can Make Everyday Life Easier

Smartphones include many helpful features, but the best settings are often buried inside menus. A few thoughtful adjustments can make the screen easier to read, calls easier to hear, and daily tasks less frustrating.

The names and locations of these settings vary between iPhone and Android devices. If you cannot find one, open Settings and use the search box at the top. Change one item at a time, test it, and keep only the adjustments that feel useful.

  1. INCREASE TEXT SIZE AND DISPLAY SIZE

If messages, menus, or website text feel too small, increase the text size. Many phones also offer a display-size or screen-zoom setting that enlarges buttons, icons, and other items—not just the words.

Search Settings for Text Size, Font Size, Display Size, or Screen Zoom. Increase the setting gradually so information remains easy to navigate. Some individual apps also have their own text-size controls.

  1. IMPROVE CONTRAST AND BUTTON VISIBILITY

Low-contrast text and buttons can be difficult to recognize. Accessibility settings may offer bold text, increased contrast, reduced transparency, color correction, or button-shape options.

Try one setting, then look at the Home screen, text messages, and a favorite app. The most useful setting is the one that makes important information easier for you to identify—not the one that looks best to someone else.

  1. TURN ON FLASH OR VIBRATION ALERTS

If you sometimes miss calls or notifications, your phone may be able to flash its camera light, flash the screen, or use a stronger vibration pattern when an alert arrives.

Search Settings for Flash Notifications, LED Flash for Alerts, Vibration, or Haptics. Flash alerts can be especially useful in a noisy room, but they may be distracting in dark spaces. Test the feature before deciding whether to leave it on.

  1. SILENCE UNKNOWN CALLERS CAREFULLY

Spam calls can interrupt the day and create opportunities for scams. Many phones can identify suspected spam or silence callers who are not in your contacts.

This feature can reduce unwanted calls, but it has a tradeoff: a doctor’s office, delivery driver, pharmacy, or new contact may also call from an unfamiliar number. Make sure voicemail is working, check it regularly, and save important numbers in your contacts.

  1. SET UP EMERGENCY INFORMATION

Most smartphones can display selected medical details and emergency contacts from the lock screen. This may help first responders or a helpful bystander contact someone without unlocking the phone.

Search Settings for Medical ID, Emergency Information, Safety, or Emergency Contacts. Add only the information you are comfortable displaying. Review it every few months so phone numbers, medications, allergies, and contacts remain current.

A BONUS SETTING: FIND MY DEVICE

Apple and Android phones include a service that may help locate, lock, or erase a missing device. The feature must usually be enabled before the phone is lost. Search Settings for Find My or Find My Device, confirm that it is turned on, and make sure you know the password for the account connected to the phone.

MAKE CHANGES AT YOUR OWN PACE

A phone should adapt to the person using it. Start with the one frustration that affects you most—small text, missed calls, spam interruptions, or emergency readiness. Adjust one setting, use the phone for a day, and decide whether the change helps.

It is also wise to take a screenshot of the original setting or write down what you changed. That makes it easier to return to the previous choice if the new setting is not comfortable.
